WBW Hamburg, Venice of the North
/S_Jeru had asked me, whether I wanted to do one of these for Hamburg – and why not? Hamburg is the Venice of the North, quite literally. It stinks just as much as the drowning city in Italy, half of it is already under water anyway and the water is probably just as toxic. All in all: It is the perfect place for smugglers, pimps and runners alike. And for ghouls, apparently. So, what can we come up with for the chummers over at the stinking, drowning city? I know that these often tend to have a very small start posts, but I cannot help myself to work in a bit of background for the free and hanseatic metropole of Hamburg – as it is colorfully fun and has a rich history (and generally speaking I love stuff like this) ;) History lesson: The basics, the weird and pirates!
The area of ourday's Hamburg was populated since about the 4th century BC. The modern city derives it's name from the Hammaburg that was build there by Karl the Great in the 9th century AD.
As it is with so many areas in Germany, Hamburg had always been important for the catholic church, who created their bishopric there – and build a cathedral. To bad that the Karolinger at that time (still 9th century) had trouble holding their powers, resulting in the settlement being run over by vikings.
The city spent the following two centuries being overrun by different groups in the area, until the church could finally get proper hold of it. They got the rank of “Free City” for helping during the crusades by decree of Barbarossa.
After the crusades were mostly over, the “Hanse”, a commerce guild, rose to power and some important trade deals were cut in Hamburg. The city grew and became a very important port for Europe. (Also: Big fire and the plague, because we are still in the 12th and 13th century. Almost the entire city burned down.)
Apparently there was also a time, when the senate of Hamburg was really obsessed with their swans. There was punishment for killing swans, attacking swans or badmothing swans. Stupid birds!
Pirates! Because everything is better with pirates! With Hamburg now being the big port that it was, it obviously became a prime target for pirates. Those pirates were called Likedeeler and the best known of them is probably Klaus Störtebecker. (Look him up, he is wiz!) He then was later decapitated in Hamburg, but legend has it, that he walked by eleven of his man without his head and by that saving them from the same fate.

Also: The stuff that is kinda typical for central Europe happened: French Revolution, Napoleon, witch hunt. You know: Classics. Also Hamburg finally joined the rest of Germany, thanks to Otto von Bismark later on.
Uhm, yeah, another big fire hit, then the second world war and in the 1960s a big flood and in general one can say, that with several fires and several floods the city has been destroyed partly more then once.
Hamburg in the late 5th world: Culture, sex and some disasters
Hamburg is of course known for the Reeperbahn – which is originally named for ropes that were made there, but is by now known for the sex businesses, strip clubs and casinos. Sadly for crime, too, which is why ourdays it is forbidden to bring weapons there of any kind. The Reeperbahn is located in St. Pauli, which is – in general – known for sex business, casinos, but also criminal activity.
In Germany Hamburg is also one of the cities with the most diverse cultural entertainment options. You've got the big theaters, the musical stages, the opera, museums, there is lot you can do here. There are also some big acting and general art academies around.
Speaking of academies, one of the Bundeswehr universities is also located in Hamburg.
The port is one of the biggest in Europe and hence is not only important for the German trade, but trade in Europe in general.
Many German media groups have either their head quarters in Hamburg or at least one of their bigger branch offices or studios there. This goes for Television and print media alike.
Given that the city is known for the sex trade, it will come to no surprise, that sex slavery in illegal brothels is a problem, the police tries to fight. Considering though that those prothels are often “hidden” in simple apartments and the like, many go unnoticed. There is a non profit cooperation called KOOFRA e.v. that cares for the victims of human trafficking and sex slavery in Hamburg.
A well known presence on the Reeperbahn is the “Heilsarmee” (Salvation Army). They are a christian group, that takes care of the homeless and people in need, so that even criminals, wandering in St. Pauli see them in a positive light and hence will not attack them or any of their buildings, making their head quarters arguably one of the safest places in St. Pauli.
Maybe not surprisingly in a city with a district with a name almost synonym with sex trade, there have been several scandals over the year involving politicians from senate, that had either to do with those businesses or were linked to drugs. Not to long ago a politician lost his seat in the senate over drug abuse.
There is also the sad fact, that there have been multiple scandals concerning the city's youth welfare service. Most of them were pretty similar: Small child with parents known to be abusive (and often alcoholic) ends up dead, even though the welfare service had been warned about the child's safety being endangered. One of the reasons quoted for this, is the youth welfare office being critically understaffed.
If you wander Hamburg by night – especially in summer – you will also notice how many homeless are living in the city, even though there are no official numbers. It is also estimated that Hamburg has one of the largest numbers of under age homeless, many of which ran away from abusive households.
Hamburg in SR – or: That bit that got covered Adding to the today's RL stuff: I know this is a bit unusual for this, but damn, I love some of those source books on the city and at least the German books have covered Hamburg quite a bit. And there is some fun stuff there.
Most importantly: The Likedeeler are back. Though not as pirates, but a crime syndicate. They also have bloody feud going on with the Lobatchewski, the local Vory group, which is lead by the brothers Victor and Vasilli Lobatchewski.
In 2011 the black flood flooded most of the city and parts of the city are still flooded to this day.
There are two sprawl areas in Hamburg: Harburg in the south, as well as an area in Altona, which had suffered greatly from the black flood. But while there are efforts made to clean those parts of Altona up, Harburg still is caught in a downwards spiral. But then there is also Wildost (“The wild east”) in Harburg, which is known to be the home for the worst of the worst, with quite a few toxic spirits crawling around there.
The primary private security/police in Hamburg is Hanse Security or HanSec for short. The port mean while is controlled by the guys from HAZMAT.
On an island in the middle of the city, the high security prison “Big Willi” is located. There is also a rather dangerous gang of former inmates, that call themselves simply “the Willis”.
There are actually two professional Urban Brawl teams in the city: The Hamburg Rams, as well as the Harburg Sharks.
The Cyber Festish scene is pretty active in Hamburg – mostly thanks to the “Alien Queen” and her club.
