Brazil should see off the Swiss, Serbians and Costa Rica to finish top of Group E. Germany should be well able to see off Korea, Sweden and Mexico. Belgium and England will surely breeze past Tunisia and Panama while Columbia should get out of a tricky group with Poland Senegal and Japan. This is one of my favourite bets for the tournament so let’s hope it goes our way!

Every other team in their group has far superior players and a last place finish looks likely for the Saudi’s. Iran are in Group B with Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Again, Iran are by far the weakest team on paper and it is hard to see them getting a result from either game with Spain or Portugal and will likely not have enough to challenge a Moroccan side with players such as Benatia and Ziyech. 10/11 looks a great price here. Japan are in Group H with Columbia, Poland and Senegal. They were in Columbia’s group in 2014 where they lost out 4-1. I think Poland and Senegal will also have too much for the Japanese and I see them finishing bottom of the group. Overall, 5.6/1 looks a decent price for this bet and looks to be great value.

The World Cup 2018 started this month in various locations throughout Russia. 32 teams from 6 continents have already competed through several matches to get their place within the final tournament and all will be hopeful that they can please their fans and countrymen. Ultimately, only 1 country will go home with the grand prize, only won by 8 countries in the competitions 88 year history. Before the tournament, pundits and experts were predicting a German, French, or Spanish victory, but some were also predicting Brazil or Belgium winning the competition.
 
The competition is divided into 8 groups at the start, each group having 4 teams. The top 2 teams from each of these groups will progress through to the knockout stages. In the group stages, 3 points is awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 for a loss.

Group A got underway with a match between Russia and Saudi Arabia, with Russia favourites to win the game and also progress to the knockouts. The first goal of the tournament was a header by the Russian Artem Dzyuba in the 25th minute of the match. Russia went on to win the match 3-0. Uruguay also won their opening match, defeating Egypt 1-0. Egypt’s star player, and their main hope of getting through the group stage, Mohamed Salah, was tripped by Uruguay’s Diego Godin and went down awkwardly, hyperextending his knee. He didn’t play in Egypt’s other two games. The next two Group A fixtures were unsurprising, with Russia beating Egypt 1-0 and Uruguay defeating Saudi Arabia thanks to two goals from Edinson Cavani. At this point, Russia and Uruguay were already confirmed in the last 16 teams, so there was little attention paid to Saudi Arabia and Egypt’s 0-0. In the final game of the group, Uruguay defeated Russia 2-0 to win the group, thanks to some very poor Russian goalkeeping from their reserve keeper Andrey Lunyov.

Group B started with Iran securing a good 2-0 victory over a sloppy and wasteful Morocco side that managed to misplace more passes than they completed. The world’s eyes then turned to Spain vs Portugal, a highly anticipated match featuring one of the tournament favourites, Spain, against their neighbours and current European champions, Portugal. Portugal scored very early thanks to a beautiful free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo. The teams were evenly matched for most of the first half but Spain managed to equalise just before halftime. When they came out for the second half, Spain were totally dominant, having possession of the ball 85% of the time. They took the lead 5 minutes into the half and then doubled their lead within a few minutes. Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patrício managed to pull off some amazing saves to keep Portugal in the match but he was finally beaten again 10 minutes before the end of the match. With the score at 4-1, Portuguese defender José Fonte gave away a penalty in the 89th minute. Diego Costa converted to make the end result 5-1, a triumphant victory to start Spain’s tournament in style. Both Portugal and Spain won both of their remaining matches in the group stage, meaning both progress to the knockouts. Portugal defeated Morocco 1-0 and Iran 2-0, whilst Spain smashed Iran 5-1 and Morocco 4-2. This meant that Spain won the group with Portugal in 2nd.

Group C featured another of the favourites, France. They managed to start their competition well, besting a surprisingly competent Australia side 3-1. This has been Peru’s first World Cup tournament since 1982, but this period away didn’t seem to affect them as they easily defeated a supposedly decent Denmark team 3-1. Australia again put in a good performance, this time beating Denmark 2-0 and putting them in a good position in the group. Peru meanwhile were beaten by a dominant French side 5-1, with Antoine Griezmann getting a hat-trick and the man of the match award. With France already through, the deciding match was between Australia and Peru to decide who would snatch a spot in the last 16. Peru started the match well, threatening Australia’s goal a number of times. Peru took the lead through a scrappy goal from Jefferson Farfán, but Australia equalised a few minutes later through veteran player Tim Cahill. Australia added another goal just before halftime. Only one goal was scored in the second half, another for Australia, meaning they took the match 3-1 and advance to the round of 16 for the second time in their history. The final match of the group saw France score 3 more goals to Denmark’s 1 to round off a successful group stage, and to make sure that a very poor Danish side went home having only scored 2 goals.

Group D was supposed to be an easy group for Argentina to progress from. Argentina were finalists in the last World Cup and have arguably the greatest player of all time, Lionel Messi, at their disposal. Some commentators pointed out their defensive weaknesses as a reason to doubt their chances, especially as their main goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, was not available to play as he was injured. These commentators were emboldened when Iceland caused a massive upset by defeating Argentina 2-0 in the first match of Group D. Croatia and Nigeria came to a 1-1 draw in a match that was marred by a controversial sending off of Ivan Perišić after he supposedly kicked a Nigerian player in the back. Argentina were then held to a 1-1 draw by Croatia. The Argentinian side had definitely improved since their shock loss at the hands of Iceland, but were still playing below the standard that is expected of a side of their calibre. A main talking point amongst pundits and commentators was the lack of impact that Messi had had in both of Argentina’s matches. A strong Iceland side managed to hold onto a draw against Nigeria before Kelechi Iheanacho had broken through in the 88th minute and was brought down in the penalty area by Ragnar Sigurðsson who was shown a red card. Nigeria’s captain John Obi Mikel converted the penalty to give Nigeria the win. The group went down to the last two matches. Nigeria scored early against Argentina before Sergio Aguero scored a fantastic overhead kick to draw level. Both sides had good chances to go in front but Giovani Lo Celso fired home from the edge of the box to ensure that Argentina squeezed through to the next round. Iceland vs Croatia remained at 0-0 until the 75th minute when Mario Mandžukić hammered home a Luka Modrić cross. Iceland levelled through Jón Daði Böðvarsson before substitute Samúel Friðjónsson turned the ball into his own net, meaning Croatia won 2-1 and progressed to the next round top of the group with Argentina in second.

Another of the favourites, Brazil, were in action in Group E. They set out in this World Cup to right the wrongs that took place 4 years ago at the last World Cup, when they were defeated 7-1 at the hands of Germany on home soil. Before they could right these wrongs, Costa Rica and Serbia played a thrilling match that ended 3-3, with 4 out of the 6 goals coming in the last 10 minutes of the match. Brazil started off with a huge setback, losing 3-2 in a huge giant-killing at the hands of Switzerland. Brazil looked to be in command of the game, 2-0 up by half time thanks to 2 goals from Neymar. Switzerland fought back hard, drawing the score level to 2-2 by the 65th minute. Brazil had about 5 clear chances to win the game but all were narrowly missed or dealt with superbly by the Swiss defence and goalkeeper. In the 80th minute, Josip Drmić was passed the ball about 45 meters away from goal on the right flank of the pitch, he glanced up, noticed the Brazilian keeper off his line, and taken a punt. The ball sailed far over the Brazilian defence and goalkeeper and crept into the goal, just below the crossbar. This meant that the Swiss won 3-2 and Drmić surely has scored the goal of the tournament. Brazil faired better against Costa Rica. Neymar found the net twice again and set up a third goal courtesy of Willian. Costa Rica pulled one back through Joel Campbell but never truly threatened Brazils 2 goal lead again. Serbia managed to beat Switzerland 2-1, due to Switzerland being unable to clinically finish the multitude of chances that they created. In the final 2 matches, Switzerland emphatically triumphed 5-1 over Costa Rica. The match mainly showcased Costa Rica’s defensive incompetency, rather than Switzerland’s attacking prowess. Nevertheless, Switzerland have proven themselves as a force to be reckoned with in this tournament. Brazil also cemented their place in the knockout rounds with a big victory over Serbia. Neymar found the net once more to take his tally for the competition up to five already. Serbia completely fell apart after going 2-0 down as they had nothing left to play for. Brazil advances to the next round in first place with only a goal more than Switzerland advancing in 2nd.

Group F contained World Cup holders Germany, who are searching for their 5th World Cup, which would make them the joint most successful team in world football. Their campaign got off to a good start with a very solid 4-2 victory over Mexico. Elsewhere in the group, Sweden, without their legendary player Zlatan Ibrahimovic, got their tournament started with a good win over South Korea. South Korea bounced back though and defeated Mexico by a very flattering 3-0 margin, a minor upset according to some commentators. Germany showed their prowess with a massive 6-2 victory against Sweden. Toni Kroos masterminded the game from midfield, setting up Thomas Müller and Mario Gómez for 2 goals each. Germany sealed their place in the second round with a 4-1 victory over South Korea, again, Kroos was the standout exceptional player. Mexico managed to beat Sweden 1-0 but it mattered little as they finished the group in 3rd place, a disappointing exit for them. Germany and South Korea advanced.

Belgium have been tipped by some bookmakers as having an outside chance of winning the trophy, and they definitely have the quality players to make this possible. They started this task by tearing Panama apart scoring 5 goals in the process. Eden Hazard bagged 2 himself and set up 2 for Romelu Lukaku in an absolutely herculean performance. England have gone over 50 years since winning their first and only World Cup. A string of very disappointing exits in previous years has led manager Gareth Southgate to choose a young side over a side with experience, as has been the case previously. It seemed to have paid off as they dispatched Tunisia with ease by 2 goals to 0. Belgium then squashed Tunisia 4-1 with another great Hazard performance, getting himself 2 assists again. England fought a plucky Panama side but in the end had too much quality and managed to end the game with a 2-1 win. With both sides already through, Belgium vs England was a fixture that decided who would go through top of the group. To the delight (and shock) of England fans everywhere, their side was leading 2-1 at halftime thanks to some shoddy Belgian defending. This didn’t last long as Michy Batshuayi levelled just after the break. The score remained in deadlock before Eden Hazard headed home the winner in injury time. This means Belgium went through first with England in 2nd.

Group G was seen as an easy qualification for Colombia and probably for Poland too. This prediction was dashed almost immediately and Japan held on to an early 2-0 lead to defeat Colombia 2-1. Poland did not have the same misfortune as 2 goals from Robert Lewandowski meant they saw off Senegal without much trouble. Japan fell to Senegal in their second match as did Poland to a much improved Colombia side, led by a good performance from Juan Cuadrado. Colombia also managed to defeat a valiant Senegal team 3-2. Senegal had been 3-0 down at halftime and had rallied to get back into the game but just couldn't give enough to equalise. Poland also made it through the group beating Japan 3-1, thanks to 2 more goals from Lewandowski.
The standout teams from the group stages have been Spain, France, Germany, and Belgium, all looking very dominant. Spain are currently the bookies favourite, followed by Germany, then France. Brazil still stand in good stead in regards to odds, most people view their defeat to Switzerland as a bit of a fluke.
The best players according to most commentators have been Toni Kroos, Eden Hazard, and Antoine Griezmann, amongst others. Neymar and Griezmann are both standing at 5 goals, the joint most, followed by Cavani and Hazard with 3. Hazard leads the assists tally, with 5.

Hi lads, I posted this a few days before the World Cup. Thought it might be interesting to look back at it to see what I thought before the tournament and see how my predictions went. As you can see I predicted a France win but in the original post I was persuaded by people in the comments to go for Germany, which I did lol! Anyway just thought this might be an interesting read, let me know what you think!
World Cup Tips & Predictions
Alright lads, here we go! As I’m writing this we are 7 days away from the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and to say I’m excited is an understatement!! Over the course of this article I will be giving my predictions and tips for the tournament and my reasoning behind them. Some really nice bets lined up and I will be doing daily tips once the tournament starts. Also just want to mention that I am working on a video explaining a strategy where you make 100 6 cent attempts to predict the exact finish of each group where the returns range from anywhere from 14k all the way up to 250k, all for a total investment of €6! (Iea was taken from a post on this subreddit) So it is definitely worth a try. Just before we start, depending on where you are reading this you can follow my progress and my other tips for the tournament on my twitter page @TheProfitBets. So without further ado, let’s get into my World Cup predictions!
Winner: France @ 13/2
The main bet most people will look towards before any major tournament is “Who is going to win it?” so it’s only right that we start things off here. France are 4th favourites for the tournament behind Argentina, Germany and Brazil. So why do I fancy France over others? First of all, let’s look at talent. France are truly blessed at the moment talent-wise and an XI of players France aren’t bringing to Russia would put many other National teams to shame. In each position France have World Class players from Llorris in goals to Kante, Pogba (On his day), Mbappe and star-man Antoine Griezmann (who we will hear more from later). They have many different options off the bench also and can approach games in many different ways with players like Giroud, Matuidi, Fekir and Tolisso all offering something different. This squad is largely similar to the squad that narrowly lost out in Extra-Time to Portugal in the Euro 2016 final so tournament experience is something France have in their favour, even given the youthful look of their squad. France are in Group C with Denmark, Australia and Peru and are expected to progress with ease to the Round of 16. Where they will likely face Croatia, before a possible gauntlet run to the final where they would possibly have to beat Portugal, Brazil and Germany before lifting the trophy. A tough run no doubt but with the huge depths of talent at their disclosure I think that the French can go all the way. The reason I fancy France over others is because of that depth of squad, which can only be rivalled by Germany, who France beat 2-0 in the Euro 2016 Semi-Final. The likes of Argentina and Brazil are reliant on a couple of players and if Messi/Neymar were to have a bad day or get injured, their teams likely would not be able to pick up the pieces (*see Neymar’s absence vs Germany in 2014 and Messi carrying Argentina through qualification). This leaves me at a toss-up between France and Germany, which I find very hard to call but have leaned towards France. France are currently priced at 13/2 in most bookmakers.
Top Goalscorer: Antoine Griezmann @ 13/1
I’ve gone for Antoine Griezmann to be top goalscorer at this year’s World Cup. His finishing is deadly and his pace and eye for goal is among the best in World football at the moment. Griezmann won the golden boot at Euro 2016 with 6 goals and is coming off a season where he scored 27 goals, including 2 in the Europa League Final. The main reason I’ve picked Griezmann is because of the group France are in. France are likely to put plenty of goals past Australia, Denmark and Peru and we could easily see the Atletico man score a few in the group stage. Griezmann is also France’s penalty taker which will probably see him scoring at least one or two goals from the spot throughout the tournament. Although Griezmann is my pick for top goalscorer other honourable mentions include Neymar @ 12/1, Timo Werner @ 20/1 and Thomas Muller @ 33/1 (World Cup Muller!). Overall though I feel the Frenchman is a good bet for the golden boot.
Group winners/to qualify ACCA @ 11.6/1
Now that we have done the two main outright single bets, let’s look at some multiple selections. This bet I look at who I think will win or qualify from each group to make a nice looking 11.6/1 accumulator. This is nicely priced and will provide entertainment for each game in the group stages.
Group A – Uruguay to win group @ 10/11
Group B – Portugal to qualify @ 4/11
Group C – France to win group @ 1/3
Group D – Argentina to qualify @ 1/7
Group E – Brazil to win group @ 2/7
Group F – Germany to win group @ 2/5
Group G – Belgium & England to qualify @ 2/9
Group H – Columbia to qualify @ 4/9
I think this looks a great bet. Uruguay will play an Egypt side without Mo Salah and should have too much for Saudi Arabia and Russia. Portugal should beat Iran and Morocco to get out of the group. We have already looked at France. Argentina should qualify from their group however it is a tricky group so feel free to leave them out as 1/7 is an awful price I think. Brazil should see off the Swiss, Serbians and Costa Rica to finish top of Group E. Germany should be well able to see off Korea, Sweden and Mexico. Belgium and England will surely breeze past Tunisia and Panama while Columbia should get out of a tricky group with Poland Senegal and Japan. This is one of my favourite bets for the tournament so let’s hope it goes our way!

This is a nice little treble where I look at teams who I think will finish bottom of their groups.
Group A – Saudi Arabia to finish last @ 2/5
Group B – Iran to finish last @ 10/11
Group H – Japan to finish last @ 3/2
Saudi Arabia are competing in their 5th World Cup and their first since 2006. They are in Group A alongside Uruguay, Egypt & Russia. On paper they look to be the weakest team in the group and they will open the tournament against hosts Russia. Every other team in their group has far superior players and a last place finish looks likely for the Saudi’s. Iran are in Group B with Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Again, Iran are by far the weakest team on paper and it is hard to see them getting a result from either game with Spain or Portugal and will likely not have enough to challenge a Moroccan side with players such as Benatia and Ziyech. 10/11 looks a great price here. Japan are in Group H with Columbia, Poland and Senegal. They were in Columbia’s group in 2014 where they lost out 4-1. I think Poland and Senegal will also have too much for the Japanese and I see them finishing bottom of the group. Overall, 5.6/1 looks a decent price for this bet and looks to be great value.
